Story: In September of 2009, 63-year-old RUDY "CLAY" CLAITONOWSKY, a rogue guitar instructor, and three of his teen-aged pupils disappeared without a trace into the sand dunes of Cape Henlopen, Delaware. Eight months later, Clay's estranged, stock broker son CLIFF makes an emotional pilgrimage to the coastal town, which he abandoned twelve years prior following the death of his mother. Amending his past and that of his father, Cliff begrudgingly forges relationships with mirthful barfly JACK, his father's closest friend, the elderly MERRILL, his mother's one-time hospice nurse, and restaurant owner, JACEY, Clay's former mistress and mother of CARL TULLIVAN, one of the missing teenagers. Looming beyond Cliff's ambivalent quest is the presence of shady real estate mogul RICK TULLIVAN, Jacey's ex-husband and father of Carl, and a spectral assemblage of reserved, faceless men, with grim ties to Clay who threaten Cliff nocturnally. As Cliff becomes mired in the unrequited love of his father and ... Written byAnonymous

Yes, Your Tide Is Cold and Dark, Sir (2013) Review by Trumpetego85 from Wilmington, Delaware
The following is an excerpt from "Wilm Film: A First for Everyone,"currently posted in the blog section of Spill.com.

The film starts off positively enough with some decent shots of theDelaware landscape as well as a brief exposition detailing the dilemmaat hand. It appears that Rudy "Clay" Claitonowsky, a local musician whohas amassed a cult-like following in his home town of Lewes, hasdisappeared along with three of his students. Clay's son, Cliff, hasreturned to Lewes in hopes of finding out what has happened to hisfather as well as closing the book on several chapters of his life.

Before moving on, I'd like to say one thing about this film; thepremise and initial concept of this movie is quite good. We have alocal musician who is so charismatic and charming that the localpopulace have almost begun to deify him. They worship and praise nearlyeverything this man does to the point that they trust him with theirchildren, and even when this trust is betrayed, it seems as though mostof the townsfolk is willing to forgive him (with the exception of themissing kids' parents). At its core, this has the potential to be agreat story. We have a prodigal son returning home to find that he isloved by nearly everyone he meets, not because of who he is or who heused to be, but because of his relation to a cult of personality. I'dlove to Streaming that movie.

However, that is not the movie I saw this evening.

What I saw was a pretentious, insipid waste of a film which thinks it'smuch smarter than it really is. What was initially a sound andintriguing premise quickly turned into David Lynch's Circus, devoid ofany artistic meaning or merit. Let me stress that I love symbolism andsurreal imagery in film, but simply throwing these aspects into yournarrative without any context or significance is utterly pointless. I'msure meaning can be found in these scenes, but only by those whoconsidered themselves to be the most conceited and hollow of hipsters.

I cannot recall the number of times during this screening that I wantedto stand up and scream, "You're trying too hard!" This narrativedoesn't need to be surreal. Hell, it doesn't even have to becomplicated! All you're telling is a "father and son" story that justhappens to revolve around an idolized father and a dislocated son, sowhy insert random and pointless surrealism? This only serves to furthercomplicate the narrative, which by itself is quite hard to followthanks to numerous subplots running rampant throughout the movie. Theseinclude the son having a romantic relationship with a former nurse ofhis mother, another centered on his father's former mistress, andanother involving land disputes and a land mogul trying to take overthe town, none of which have any bearing on the movie's resolution.

The film only further frustrates the viewer when the performances rangefrom dull and tiresome to exaggerated and melodramatic. The mainantagonist of the film (the aforementioned land mogul) is sostereotypically over-the-top that I expected him to be stroking a catwhenever he was on screen. This character appears to serve as themovie's comedic relief, although I cannot tell if the laughterassociated with this character is due to the actor's terribleperformance or his awkward dialogue. It is this so-called comedy thatserves to confuse me the most. Shortly before entering the screening, Iread a small description of the film in a pamphlet provided by WilmFilm which described the movie as a "dark comedy." You can imagine myconfusion when I went on the film's official website later that nightwhere is it described as a "neo-surrealist drama." Amazingly, neitherof these descriptions fit. The movie can certainly be dark at times, but there is no sense of comedy at all, although one could consider thelame attempts at surrealism the funniest parts of the film.

The movie concludes with a sudden bout of incoherent scenes andphrases, and as the credits role, my mind is racked with unintelligibleimagery and metaphors, all of which make me wish I had snuck in aflask. My girlfriend and I slowly exit the theater, exchanging dazedand defeated looks between ourselves and other patrons. She makes aquick joke about how she would love someone like the Nostalgia Criticor OanCitizen to do a review of this movie, and it suddenly dawns on methat "Yes, Your Tide is Cold and Dark, Sir" is eerily similar toanother infamous film which has been torn apart by both internet andprofessional critics alike. The film in question features a man pullingtriple duty as an actor, writer, and director, not unlike the film wejust saw. It was also advertised as a drama before critics startedshunning the film, then the studio and director suddenly changed theirtone and said it was meant to be a dark comedy, so it appears both ofthese films are suffering from an identity crisis.

The movie I speak of is "The Room," and while "Yes, Your Tide is Coldand Dark, Sir," is not as bad as that piece of cinematic garbage, I dothink that with this film, Delaware may have found its own TommyWiseau.

Yes, Your Tide Is Cold and Dark, Sir (2013) Review by eatingfigs00 from United States
On the surface, "Yes, Your Tide Is Cold And Dark, Sir" is a complicatedand somewhat circuitous story which deals with a man named Cliff andhis search for his missing father, Clay, who's gone missing formonths/years with a a group of his guitar students. However, this filmis far deeper than a mere physical quest, as Cliff must confront bothcolorful and dim spiritual bromides and feelings for both his lostfather and his deceased mother, and, finally, a challenging pastrelationship. This piece is definitely for the quick-witted. Beautifulregionalist filmmaking on a shoestring. Again, it's a contemplativefilm for the emotionally lost.

Yes, Your Tide Is Cold and Dark, Sir (2013) Review by winslowevan from Delaware
This is not a "Streaminger's" film, by this I simply mean that the viewermust be engaged in the film and actively thinking looking for theexhibitions of the film's theme and meaning; not simply mindless anduninvolved like Die Hard (nothing wrong with Die Hard, its just adifferent type of movie). The movie, like any other good movie, must beseen more than once to fully grasp the implication of the themes andits deep roots manifesting themselves even in seemingly insignificantdetails

The beginning is somewhat slow and some of the footage has the skew ofa rolling shutter which is hard to correct, it is because of this andthe beginning confusion that I did not give the rating of 10/10 (Idon't know of any perfect movie that deserves 10/10 anyways).

As the film progresses, however, especially towards the middle the plotas well as the meaning begin to click and the interest peaks highly. The film is full of tension and dark and beautiful imagery which, alongwith the dialog and plot, creates a deep tension the viewer can feelenabling empathy for the main character Cliff. The tension is notconstant and is just the right amount without turning away the audienceand the occasional humorous remark breaks the tension in perfectbalance. The acting was excellent and better than a number of Hollywoodfilms which helped strengthen the film's integrity and emotions, perhaps only once (if at all) did I feel that an actor did not fullyportray realistic feelings and emotions and it had no impact on thestory or the theme itself.

After viewing I feel there were many details and symbols I missed, especially in the opening of the film which I eagerly await tointerpret with another showing. I believe the first viewing, after mypondering interpretation, will shed new light and interest on thebeginning, and the whole film as a whole when viewing the movie asecond time.

I didn't expect it from the beginning, but I am in love with "Yes, YourTide is Cold and Dark Sir"
